Hushmail, a provider of encrypted web based email, prides itself on the fact that supposedly "not even a Hushmail employee with access to our servers can read your encrypted e-mail, since each message is uniquely encoded before it leaves your computer." But alas, they too have given into the demands of the government.

As it turns out, this service does not apply to individuals targeted by government agencies. One such agency was able to convince a Canadian court to order the company to release records.

Advice from an insurrectionary hacker - "If you are using the Hushmail service, try to always use the Java client version rather than the SSL version, as it gives Hushmail less information (like your passphrase) that they can then hand off to the po to decrypt your emails."

Law Firm Suspects Government of Tapping Phones

A law firm in Vermont has suspicions that their phone lines may have been tapped by the government. After having some phone issues, the law firm had a technician from Verizon Vermont examine their phone lines and the tech determined that some phone lines had been crossed but could not give an explanation as to why.

A forensic examination of one the lawyers computers also determined that an application had been used to disable the security software on the computer giving anyone access to all the information contained on the computer.

Cyborg Moths

Mothballs may not keep these critters away. From a report at Fox News, the military has been working on a cyborg moth. To be used as surveillance of terrorist camps, these insects are being "grown" by scientists in an attempt to create undetectable surveillance devices.

The cyborg moths are created when scientists implant a computer chip in the moth's while they are in the pupae stage. The moth then continues to develop or grow around the computer chip, thus becoming a "cyborg", the term used in science fiction movies for robots that are covered with real flesh.

The Identity Theft Resource Center recently put out a article to remind resume posters what NOT to include in their online resume's. When posting your resume online, sending it in the mail or in response to an ad on a website you should remember that your resume is only an introduction to your work experience. Not a biography of your life and it should not include the following:

Your Social Security Number (SSN)
Date of birth (DOB)
The year you graduated from various schools. The preferred option is to list any degrees received and the subject or area of specialty.
Professional license number
Sex and age - it is against the law for them to ask you for this information
Disabilities - unless the job specifies a request to describe any physical limitations, you should not offer this information up front
EIN (taxpayer id number if you use that as an alternate to the SSN)
Driver's license number

If you exclude the above information from your online resume then hackers will not be able to get your personal information even if they do hack into a site.

Test your knowledge of online Scams!

There is always someone out there looking to get your money or identity. Are you web savvy enough to recognize a "phishing" website or other online scam techniques?

McAffee Inc's Site Advisor has created a simple test to take to test your ability to spot "phishing" attempts by scammer's to obtain your passwords or other personal info by mimicking popular websites such as Ebay, Paypal and MySpace.

The test consists of 10 questions. Eight of the questions are images of webpages, you need to choose the authentic one and the other two questions are general knowledge questions regarding emails and security certificates.

After completing the test, see your results and McAfee will show you what telltale signs to look for such as misspellings and suspicious web addresses.

This SpyAssociates member and Internet Marketing Manager took the test and got six out of ten right. In all fairness, the images of the webpages are a bit blurry and even though you can "enlarge" the image, they aren't much better until you get to the results of your test and it shows you the suspicious signs to look for - misspelled words, incorrect logo's, etc.

Asbury Park considering Surveillance Camera's

Reported in the Asbury Park Press, the Asbury Park city council is considering installing surveillance camera's in select locations as a deterrent to crime. Not an inexpensive project to take on but it would pay off in the end.

The city of East Orange has had success with the surveillance camera's and noise sensors that pinpoint the location of gunshots that are installed in the city. Twice the size of Asbury Park, East Orange has seen a dramatic decrease in crime by 38%. Shootings are down by 30% and murders by half. Installing the 18 camera's and close to 100 sensors cost the city about $150,000 but it was money well spent.

The city also enlists the help of residents to deter crime. They have created a "Virtual Community Patrol", a website for select residents to access views of the neighborhood and to report to police any crimes in progress.

The police in Asbury Park are making progress in fighting crime in their city, but any help from surveillance camera's and other technology can only assist them more.

Mother uses child to steal Puppy

A woman in St. Cloud, Florida was arrested for stealing a puppy. Not to big a deal to have a story on the news about, right? Well, this "brilliant" woman used her young children to scope out a pet store and then stole a puppy. The whole thing was caught on the stores security camera's.

The story was reported on the local news and several viewers who saw the tape called the police and identified the woman. She was arrested.

The ironic thing about this is that one of the kids pointed out the camera to the woman, she then tried to teach them how to steal security camera's!

GPS - How it Works

In today's world, everyone has one gadget or another to make their lives easier, faster, more convenient. GPS units and devices are one such gadget. For those of us who get lost easily, there are GPS units that can be purchased and used in your vehicles, to help keep us from ending up on the other side of the world! Businesses that utilize fleets of trucks or have company cars can keep track of them, either historically or in real time. So, what is GPS and how does it work?

First, GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a way of locating a reciever in three dimensional space anywhere on the planet or even orbiting around the planet.

How GPS works:
GPS is based on the sending and receiving of signals from satellites that are in orbit around the Earth. Each satellite broadcasts a specific signal, similar to a radio signal. The signal is recieved through an aerial. Rather than broadcasting a radio or tv show, the signals carry data that is recieved, decoded and used by GPS software.

The GPS software takes the signals from the satellites and then calculates the position of the reciever. It is basically the orienteering principle. If you are looking at a map, you find three locations, take a bearing of where they are, draw three lines on the map and you will determine where you are on the map.

The three lines intersect and depending on how accuratly you detemined your bearings, the triangle that the lines form and where they intersect will give an approximate position within a margin of error.

The GPS software performs a similiar action. It uses the known position of the satellites and the time it takes for the signal to travel from satellite to Earth.

The resulting "trilateration", this is the term used when distances are used instead of bearings, of at least three satellites enables the GPS software to determine where a device is located based on longitude, latitude and the center of the earth.

There are different types of GPS devices. Those that can provide a Historical Log of where and even when your receiver was at a specific location. Real Time GPS Live Tracking allows for you to monitor vehicles as they are traveling.

Tips for Personal Safety

Here are a few tips for Personal Safety from Spy Associates.com

1. Be aware of your surroundings. Carry a personal alarm and don't be afraid to use it.

2. Women, wear your purse across your body. Over your head and diagonal across your body, keep it in front of you and close to your chest. Doing so makes it harder to be snatched from you.

3. Men, keep your wallet in your front pocket.

4. If someone does attack, shout out "call 911". Make it loud and as many times as you can.

5. If someone demands your purse or wallet, do so BUT toss it away from you. Chances are the thief is more interested in the money than you and it will give you the chance to run away.

6. Use your elbows! You have two and they are great weapons. Don't be afraid to use them.

7. If someone gets in your car and tells you to drive - Do it, hit the gas and run into the first thing you see (IE: lamp post, guard rail, tree). Your airbags will deploy, giving you an opportunity to escape from the captor.

8. If you are ever locked in a trunk, kick out the brake lights and stick your hand out. The driver won't see you but everyone else will.

9. If someone comes to your house in any sort of official uniform (police, fireman or repairman) ask for identification before letting them in. If you are stil unsure, tell them that you are going to call their office to confirm their identity. DO NOT LET THEM IN until you are positive they are who they say they are.

Remaining alert to your surroundings and not letting the fear take over will keep you safe. To further your personal safety, take a self defense course or learn from a book. There are many simple things you can do to keep yourself safe.

Many homeowners are installing security systems that not only are alarms but include video surveillance as well. We want to "catch a intruder" in the act. Video surveillance systems consist of, well the obvious, video camera's, a recorder/playback unit, a monitor and sometimes a motion detector.

Surveillance cameras in Middlesbrough, England have been outfitted with speakers so that operators can yell at citizens who they see misbehaving. Other similar "talking" systems have been installed elsewhere. From the BBC News:

"For example, if an operative now sees someone dropping litter, they can tell them to pick it up, or if they see an incident starting to get out of hand, they can give advice that will hopefully nip it in the bud," (said Barry Coppinger, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for community safety.)

Placing a GPS locating device on a vehicle

Trackers use satellites to accurately monitor and evaluate travel activities, with proof of exact date, time, speed, and location. GPS accuracy is dependent upon proper placement of the satellite receiver's antenna. The rule of thumb is , "metal is not a friend of GPS".

Optimum performance is achieved when the antenna has a view of the satellite(s) without metal obstructions.

The signal will usually be sufficient through plastic, fiber glass, carpet, cardboard, or glass. Taking a few extra minutes to locate the best location for the antenna will reward you with the best possible tracking data.

The#1 recommended spot to mount the unit is underneath the vehicle using either epoxy, industrial grade velcro or a custom designed magnetic mounting bracket. That said, it's important to mount the unit as close to the edge of the undercarriage as possible to minimize interference the actual vehicle.

Other places to mount the device:
Inside the plastic bumper of the vehicle(front or rear - near the edge of the bumper).
Under the bug shield if present in front of the vehicle.
Inside rear speakers or under rear dash.
Behind the glove compartment (only possible if the device is facing up through front area through gaps of the hood.
On top of the roof.
In between the window and hood showing through gaps of the hood.

Under the back or front seat (Note: Possible but NOT recommended).
Inside the glove compartment (Note: Possible but NOT recommended).
